HOUSE FOR A THEOLOGIAN
Renovation of an apartment in Messina

“Quiet the mind, and the soul will speak.”
(Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati)

The project’s aim is to identify simplicity as a lifestyle, a way of organizing
and defining daily rituals and necessities.

A reverence for simplicity was favoured to investigate what the Japanese call wabi,
an aesthetic and moral principle which allows both physical and psychological space for contemplation, encouraging stillness and detachment from material things.

The work takes on the task of transforming a traditional apartment in to a living-working environment, made up of flexible spaces and combines a paired back simplicity with an attention to everyday life details.

The clients’ main brief was to increase the visible space and create lighter, airier rooms.

These needs were translated in a larger, more comfortable living area, integrating the entrance
and hallway which were narrow and didn’t allow the space to flow freely.

Essential means capture the sense of this home and a uniformity of materials and colours render
the space concise and compact.
